U.S. Border Patrol Right on Target with its Internet Enabled Training and Assessment Database

Glynco, Georgia - September 29, 2000 - The U.S. Border Patrol, located in the Federal Law and Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia, successfully installed its graphically enhanced version of the Academy Class Management System (ACMS) in September 2000. ACMS is a comprehensive web-based training and assessment database that maintains detailed student profiles, tracks academic and physical training grades, assesses training results, and graphically measures training progress with defined goals and standards. A key management feature, ACMS integrates a powerful graphical tool that allows user-defined reports and provides statistical summaries throughout any stage of the training cycle.

The U.S. Border Patrol trains approximately 8,000 students per year at its Glynco, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina training facilities. With over 40 training sessions per year, the migration from a manual record keeping system to an online and secure database greatly streamlined the training academy's business processes. ACMS allows the academy staff to quickly access key training information and to review detailed graphical and statistical summaries.

Tony Ruiz, U.S. Border Patrol ACMS Program Manager, is quite pleased with the system. He stated, "ACMS is a real time saver for our staff! We can retrieve individual or class training data with graphical and statistical summaries within seconds. This capability allows us to identify 'at risk' students and to make cost-effective decisions without unnecessary delays. Our office productivity has greatly improved and ACMS even prints an awards ceremony agenda by recipient name. This system is quite impressive and would benefit similar training organizations where off-the-shelf software just doesn't fit."

U.S. Border Patrol Subject-Matter-Experts (SMEs) from the Glynco and Charleston offices defined the business, technical, and user requirements with the software developer, Envisage. The project team was comprised of Cary Hunt, Matt Lieurance, and Pierce Brown from the Glynco office and Jorge Gulterrez, Carlan Hinnant, and Carl Harman from the Charleston office.

Envisage, a private e-business and technology solutions provider in Bloomington, Indiana, designed and developed ACMS on Windows NT using Active Server Pages/VB Script, JavaScript, and Crystal Reports. ACMS is a web-enabled Oracle 8.0 database that provides secure data entry, update, and custom metrics reporting and Envisage is providing full life cycle development and support services. Envisage develops custom applications and company Intranets for its clients by integrating proven information technology solutions that reduce software delays and costs.
